Uzbekistan’s Central Bank to Issue Commemorative Coins for Samarkand Chess Olympiad

The Central Bank of Uzbekistan will issue commemorative gold and silver coins marking the 46th World Chess Olympiad, taking place in Samarkand from September 15 to 27. The designs combine chess symbols with the city’s architectural heritage.
The collection is based on the concept “Two Coins — One Registan.” When the gold and silver coins are placed side by side, they form a single image of the facade of Registan Square.
The obverse features architectural elements of the Tilla-Kari Madrasah, silhouettes of chess pieces and geometric patterns representing strategic thinking, intellectual leadership and unity. The reverse carries the FIDE logo.
The coins will be made of 999.9-purity gold and silver. Each will weigh 31.1 grams and have a face value of 100,000 soums. The initial mintage will be 100 gold and 500 silver coins, with the possibility of increasing the issue depending on collectors’ interest.
The coins will be available individually or as two-coin collectible sets. The Samarkand Olympiad has set a participation record, with 208 teams in the Open section and 192 in the Women’s event.
