Vance: US-Iran Conflict to Enter a New Phase in the Coming Months

U.S. Vice President JD Vance said the conflict between the United States and Iran could enter a “much different phase” in the coming months in an interview with the New York Post. He said the first phase of the confrontation had already been completed, while the next phase would focus on preventing Iran from rebuilding.
“We can’t predict the future, but I think the president is right to say that this thing will enter a much different phase in a couple of months,” Vance said.
According to Vance, the first phase involved destroying Iran’s nuclear program and armed forces. The second phase, he said, is aimed at preventing the Islamic Republic from rebuilding its capabilities.
Iran’s nuclear program remains one of the central issues in the conflict. Washington is pressing Tehran to suspend uranium enrichment and dismantle facilities damaged during the U.S. “Midnight Hammer” operation in the summer of 2025.
In June, the two sides signed a memorandum intended to launch the process of reaching a peace agreement. Three weeks later, however, a new escalation began: the United States accused Iran of attacks on commercial vessels, after which an exchange of missile strikes resumed. Reuters has also reported that the June memorandum subsequently unraveled.
At the end of August, Donald Trump announced a strategy of economic isolation against Iran while leaving open the possibility of returning to military measures. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described Trump’s statements as an admission of defeat in the conflict.
Vance’s comments indicate that Washington expects the confrontation to move into a different phase in the coming months, with preventing Iran from rebuilding its military and nuclear capabilities presented as a key objective.
