Vucic Announces Dissolution of Serbian Parliament and Early Elections on October 25

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has announced the dissolution of the National Assembly and early parliamentary elections. He said he would sign the decree dissolving parliament on September 9 and set the vote for October 25.
Vucic made the announcement on RTS television, adding that he had previously received a proposal from the government to dissolve parliament.
The president called on all participants in the election campaign to take citizens’ needs and problems into account and find ways to “reach the people” rather than putting their own interests first. He also stressed that violence should not be used during the campaign.
According to Vucic, citizens will have an opportunity in 45 days to “clearly express their will”, explain what they want and how they see the country’s future.
“I will gladly accept any democratic result, I consider this important for the state. I will congratulate my opponents if they win, and I will not be angry if they do not congratulate me, I am used to it,” the Serbian president said.
The decision to hold early parliamentary elections follows earlier statements by Vucic about a possible departure from the presidency. In June, speaking at a rally of his supporters in Belgrade, he said he would remain president for “just a few more weeks”, after which Serbia should hold early presidential and parliamentary elections.
“I will be president for just a few more weeks, and then I will resign. Nothing lasts forever, and thank God that is the case,” Vucic said.
