What do you know about the number one pomegranate in Uzbekistan?
Uzbekistan
Sherabad pomegranates have become a regional brand and hold their value and price in the market. The most popular pomegranate in the area is also grown in Sherabad. Residents of the region call the pomegranate the "king" of all fruits because of the tiny crown on its head, reports the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture of Uzbekistan.
Pomegranate varieties from the region, such as Gulobi, Toshqo‘rg‘on, Gayzara, and Qora dona, are exported to about 10 countries worldwide, including South Korea, Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. The geographical export potential increases each year.
Sherabad pomegranates develop differently from those grown in other regions. They grow vertically, whereas in some regions, pomegranates are buried to protect them from the cold, causing the fruit branches to grow in a bent position.
The climate of the region plays a significant role in the unique ripening of Sherabad pomegranates. Since pomegranates ripen well in high temperatures, the climate in this area is favourable for this fruit. Sherabad is rich in water, and its soil is fertile, as noted by the ministry.
According to the Statistics Agency under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, in February 2024, large enterprises in the country produced 159.9 tons of pomegranate juice.
Sherabad District is an administrative unit in the Surkhandarya region of Uzbekistan. The administrative centre is the town of Sherabad.
