“I personally asked Putin not to fire on Kyiv and various cities for a week. He agreed,” Trump said on Thursday during a meeting of the US Cabinet, without specifying when the period would begin.

Trump noted that the request was linked to cold weather conditions and potential humanitarian consequences during winter.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on Trump’s remarks, thanking the US for its diplomatic efforts while stressing that the real situation on the ground would be the ultimate test.

“Thank you to the American side for efforts aimed at halting strikes on the energy sector during this time. We hope the United States can ensure this. The situation tonight and in the coming days — the real situation at our energy facilities and in our cities — will show,” Zelensky wrote.
