Why Tashkent Is Choking: Key Sources of Smog Identified

Uzbekistan

According to IQAir, air pollution in Tashkent is caused by a combination of several factors rather than a single source. In summer, the dominant contributor is natural dust, accounting for 36% of PM2.5 pollution. Dry climate, winds from desert areas and the surrounding mountains prevent particles from dispersing.

In winter, the situation worsens due to heating. The burning of coal and fuel oil in greenhouses and private homes generates around 28% of pollution, sharply increasing PM2.5 levels.

Transport contributes about 16%, driven largely by an aging vehicle fleet and low-quality fuel.

Industrial facilities and power plants add another 13%.

Experts highlight that weather conditions have a significant impact as well. Weak winds and temperature inversions trap polluted air over the city, causing smog to accumulate and intensifying the environmental burden.
