Thai authorities have arrested a Russian national wanted by the United States for large-scale cyberattacks. The operation, conducted on the island of Phuket with FBI involvement, is part of expanding cooperation between Bangkok and Washington in combating cybercrime.
According to Phuket News, the arrest followed a formal extradition request from US authorities. The announcement was made on November 12 during a press conference held by the Thai Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (TCSD).
The TCSD stated that the 35-year-old Russian is accused of cyberattacks targeting digital infrastructure of government agencies in the US and Europe. American authorities have described him as a “world-class hacker.” The case is being handled by the FBI.
Thailand’s Office of the Attorney General approved the arrest under the country’s extradition law. The Russian was taken into custody as a person sought by a foreign government.
As Thaiger reports, the suspect arrived in Phuket on October 30 and was staying in a hotel in the Thalang district, where he was detained. A laptop, several smartphones, and a cryptocurrency wallet were seized during the operation.
FBI agents observed the arrest and search operations. Formal extradition proceedings to transfer the suspect to US custody are expected to begin soon.
