The anniversary meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State was held on September 1, 2026, under the chairmanship of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov. The summit approved 28 documents, including the Bishkek Declaration and a protocol amending the SCO Charter. The organisation was established in Shanghai on June 15, 2001, by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan joined in 2017, Iran in 2023 and Belarus in 2024. The SCO now has 10 member states, two observer states and 15 dialogue partners. Over the past 25 years, the SCO&rsquo;s agenda has expanded well beyond security and cross-border cooperation. Its current framework covers trade and investment, transport, energy, manufacturing, agriculture, digital technologies, education, culture, tourism and other areas. Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev proposed developing the &ldquo;SCO&ndash;2040&rdquo; concept to create an interconnected space for the exchange of investment, technology and knowledge and to facilitate major infrastructure and industrial projects. He also proposed an SCO Industrial Cooperation Map and the preparation of a portfolio of projects in transport, energy, industrial cooperation and digital infrastructure. For Central Asia, food, water and energy security remain key areas of cooperation. The summit also provided an opportunity for a series of bilateral meetings among participating leaders. Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with several leaders on the sidelines of the gathering. Following the summit, Pakistan assumed the SCO chairmanship for 2026&ndash;2027. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is marking its 25th anniversary after evolving from a mechanism focused on border confidence-building into a 10-member organisation with a broad economic, transport and humanitarian agenda. At the anniversary summit in Bishkek, Uzbekistan proposed developing an “SCO–2040: A Space for Common Development” concept to further expand practical cooperation.

NASA Space Apps Challenge is the world&rsquo;s largest annual global hackathon, bringing participants together to tackle real-world challenges in science and space exploration using open data provided by NASA and its partners. In 2026, the event will take place across more than 450 in-person and virtual Local Events worldwide. Participants can combine skills in programming, engineering, design, data analysis, scientific research and other fields. The NASA International Space Apps Challenge will return to Tashkent in 2026, marking the fifth time the Uzbek capital has hosted the global hackathon. The event is scheduled for November 14–15 and is open to participants regardless of age, professional background or level of experience.

Under the deal, North American Blue Energy Partners (NABEP), led by Venezuelan businessman Alejandro Betancourt, will give the U.S. government the right to purchase 20% of its oil output at cost. The U.S. government will also hold a 35% stake in the company, while U.S. citizens are required to make up a majority of its board of directors. Washington will have veto power over board appointments. The agreement will give the U.S. access to assets previously operated by Russian and Chinese companies. The agreement has been backed in Venezuela by National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez and Defense Minister Gustavo Gonzalez Lopez. Some opposition lawmakers, however, abstained from the vote, saying they first needed to review the deal&rsquo;s detailed terms. The agreement is scheduled to be signed on Wednesday. Venezuela’s National Assembly has approved a deal expanding U.S. control over assets linked to roughly one-fifth of the country’s oil reserves. The agreement gives Washington preferential access to 17 oil fields and strengthens U.S. influence over the management of Venezuelan oil assets.

Madise was the only officially registered candidate in the presidential election. Her nomination was submitted by 75 members of the Riigikogu. She will succeed Alar Karis, whose five-year term ends in October. Karis had previously announced that he would not seek a second term. Estonia’s parliament, the Riigikogu, elected Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise as the country’s new president on September 2. She secured 71 of 101 votes in a secret ballot, exceeding the 68 votes required for election.
