ADB to allocate $125 million to improve Uzbekistan's electricity grid
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a loan of $125 million to improve Uzbekistan's power transmission network, increase energy efficiency and ensure the integration of more renewable energy sources into the energy balance of the countries, the bank's press service reported.

It is expected that within the framework of the project "Digitalization for Decarbonization — A project to improve the electricity transmission network", 12 power transmission lines will be reconstructed in seven regions — Bukhara, Ferghana, Kashkadarya, Samarkand, Surkhandarya, Navoi and Tashkent regions — with a total length of about 359 km.

The project will also finance the reconstruction and modernization of four 220-kilovolt substations in Fayzabad, Obi-hayot, Zafar and Zarafshan to increase their capacity and meet current and projected energy needs.

"The project will help Uzbekistan meet the growing demand for reliable and affordable electricity, while supporting the country's transition to a green and low—carbon economy," said ADB Director General for Central and West Asia Evgeny Zhukov.

As part of the project, the power transmission network will be digitalized by replacing old technologies with modern high-voltage lines and substations ready to be connected to the dispatch control and data collection system (SCADA).

This will allow the dispatch center to control remotely and receive real-time data and archived data. The National Electric Networks of Uzbekistan company will be able to better manage the power supply and increase the capacity to generate renewable energy in the grid.

The project will also strengthen the potential of the National Electric Networks of Uzbekistan company in the field of corporate governance and project management.

Uzbekistan joined the ADB in 1995. Since then, the bank has provided loans, grants and technical assistance to the country in the amount of $10.8 billion.
