Why Slovakia Insists on Dialogue with the Kremlin

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has openly declared his intention to hold direct talks with Vladimir Putin. Calling for an end to the "senseless killing," the Slovak leader is ready to go against the general EU trend and raise issues that many in the West still consider taboo.

Why Slovakia Insists on Dialogue with the Kremlin
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced plans to personally discuss a ceasefire in Ukraine with the Russian President. Speaking to students, the politician emphasized the need for an immediate transition to diplomacy, labeling the continued hostilities as "senseless killing." According to Fico, it is time for the parties to sit down at the negotiating table and abandon "unrealistic goals." He cited demands for the return of Crimea and the withdrawal of Russian forces from Donetsk and Lugansk as examples of such unrealistic objectives.

Fico noted that while the EU de facto recognizes the impossibility of a military victory, pressure remains to continue financing the conflict. He attributed this to a prevailing Western narrative regarding the alleged collapse of the Russian economy—a claim the Prime Minister believes is largely exaggerated by the media. The Slovak leader remains convinced that only direct dialogue and the recognition of current realities can stop the bloodshed in the region.
