AFC Prepares a Nations League for Asian Football
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced a decision in principle to introduce a Nations League for its 47 members. The initiative aims to create a more structured and sustainable system of international matches in Asia.

According to AFC General Secretary Datuk Seri Windsor John, the main development problem is the ineffective use of FIFA's official match windows by national teams. Traditional friendly matches are losing their meaning due to difficulties in finding equally matched opponents, high operational costs, and logistical problems.

The new AFC Nations League is designed to address these issues by offering national teams:

Regular and meaningful matches during FIFA calendar windows.

Balanced competition through the division of teams by level.

Improved economic efficiency through centralized organization.

Clear pathways for progress in the tournament table for all national associations.

More detailed information on the tournament format, schedule, and regulations will be announced after discussions in AFC committees and consultations with stakeholders. The introduction of the Nations League will be the next logical step after the successful reform of AFC club competitions and will fundamentally change the landscape of national team football in the region.
