France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reported that Algeria has requested 12 staff members from the French diplomatic mission to leave the country. Algeria has given the French embassy employees 48 hours to leave. This was announced on Monday, April 14, by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot.

According to AFP, among the 12 individuals are both diplomats and officials from the French Ministry of the Interior.

Earlier, three Algerian nationals, including a diplomat, were accused in France of being involved in the kidnapping of an opposition figure. Barrot described Algeria’s move as a response to the earlier arrest of the three Algerians in Paris and urged Algeria to reconsider. “If the decision to expel our officials stands, we will have no choice but to respond immediately,” Barrot said.

For reference, the three Algerians, including an embassy employee, were arrested in France. On April 11, France’s National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) charged them with involvement in the kidnapping of prominent Algerian opposition figure Amir Boukhors, who has more than 1.1 million followers on TikTok.

Boukhors was kidnapped in April 2024 in a suburb of Paris, held for 27 hours, and then released. According to AFP, Algeria has issued nine international arrest warrants against him, accusing him of fraud and terrorism.

As reported by Le Monde, the indictment against the Algerian nationals states that “a foreign state has unhesitatingly carried out violent actions on French soil through intimidation and terror, posing a threat to life.”
