Following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in strikes carried out by the United States and Israel, consultations have begun in Tehran over his successor. According to The New York Times, citing informed Iranian officials, his son Mojtaba Khamenei has emerged as the leading candidate.
Senior clerics responsible for selecting the next leader reportedly held a closed-door meeting on Tuesday. Sources say Mojtaba Khamenei became the clear front-runner during the discussions.
Officials considered announcing him as successor as early as Wednesday morning. However, concerns were raised that a public declaration could make him a direct target for the United States and Israel.
Iran’s Supreme Leader is appointed by the 88-member Assembly of Experts.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that any new Iranian leader who continues confrontation with Israel would be viewed as a legitimate target. His remarks were reported by Reuters.
Katz said that any leader pursuing threats against Israel, the United States, and regional countries “will unequivocally be a target for elimination.”
