Azerbaijan is solidifying its status as a pivotal mediator in global diplomacy. On April 25, in the scenic city of Gabala, Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Volodymyr Zelensky held a meeting that could mark a turning point in the search for ways to resolve the military conflict in Europe.

The negotiations were conducted both in a one-on-one format and in an expanded session with their respective delegations. The central highlight of the visit was a high-profile statement by Volodymyr Zelensky: Ukraine has officially expressed its readiness to hold the next round of peace talks with Russian representatives on Azerbaijani territory. The Ukrainian leader emphasized that Kyiv is prepared to resume the trilateral negotiating format (Ukraine-Russia-mediator), which was previously tested in Turkey and Switzerland. According to Zelensky, should the Russian side demonstrate a readiness for genuine diplomacy, Baku would serve as an ideal platform for such a meeting.

Beyond global security issues, the leaders discussed the bilateral agenda in detail. Special attention was paid to the energy sector, where Azerbaijan remains a strategic partner, as well as to agriculture and revitalizing the activities of the Intergovernmental Commission. Zelensky expressed deep gratitude to Ilham Aliyev for the consistent humanitarian aid and the care provided to Ukrainian children. As part of this program, a new group of Ukrainian students is scheduled to arrive in Azerbaijan shortly—not only for psychological rehabilitation but also to immerse themselves in the country’s rich cultural heritage.

The parties reaffirmed their intention to expand practical cooperation, turning economic and humanitarian ties into a solid foundation for long-term partnership. Zelensky’s visit to Gabala demonstrated that today’s Azerbaijan is not only a vital energy hub but also a space of trust where the most complex geopolitical challenges of our time can be addressed.
