ECB Unveils Final Design Options for Future Euro Banknotes

The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled the final design proposals for the next generation of euro banknotes and launched a public consultation to help determine the future appearance of the currency. Two themes remain under consideration: European culture and European nature.
According to the ECB, around 1,200 design submissions were received before the selection process narrowed the competition to two concepts, each featuring five banknote designs covering different denominations.
The cultural series highlights prominent figures in European history. The proposed portraits include opera singer Maria Callas (€5), composer Ludwig van Beethoven (€10), scientist Marie Curie (€20), writer Miguel de Cervantes (€50), artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci (€100), and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Bertha von Suttner (€200).
The alternative series focuses on Europe's natural heritage. It features European bird species set against river landscapes on the front of the banknotes, while the reverse side depicts key European Union institutions, including the European Parliament, the European Commission, the European Central Bank, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Council and the Council of the European Union, as well as the European Court of Auditors.
ECB President Christine Lagarde invited citizens across the euro area to participate in selecting the future design. Once the public consultation is completed, the ECB will move to the technical phase of preparing the new banknote series.
