In the Democratic Republic of Congo, an outbreak of an unknown disease has claimed the lives of more than 50 people. According to medical professionals, most patients died within two days of the onset of symptoms.
The first outbreak began on January 21 in the city of Boloco, when three children ate a bat and soon died from the symptoms of hemorrhagic fever. Since then, 419 cases of infection have been recorded, of which 53 have resulted in fatalities.
The second outbreak was recorded on February 9th in the city of Bomate. Samples of patients were sent for testing, but tests for Ebola and the Marburg virus showed a negative result. Some analyses showed the presence of malaria, but doctors are not yet sure whether it is the cause of such high mortality.
The WHO notes that over the past decade, the number of animal-to-human disease outbreaks in Africa has increased by 60%. Doctors continue to investigate the situation to prevent further spread of the disease.
