The solar maximum is expected to occur between mid-2024 and early 2026, according to astronomers' predictions.

Astronomers: The Sun is approaching peak activity
The Sun is approaching the peak of activity, known as solar maximum, within its 11-year cycle, reports science portal Space.com, citing experts from the Space Weather Coordination Centre (SSCC) of the European Space Agency (ESA).

According to ESA, current techniques will only allow scientists to confirm the start of this period in seven months. The solar cycle is determined by the magnetic field of the star and manifests itself through the appearance of spots on its surface.

"The maximum is computed (as a convention) with the 13-month smoothed sunspot number (which means that for each month you use the value of six months before and six months after). The exact value of this quantity for time T is known only 6 months later," explained ESA.

Consequently, it will be clear to astronomers whether the solar maximum was reached in a particular month if the number of sunspots in the following month decreases.

Scientists from the SSCC believe that solar activity is likely to continue to increase in the coming months. This is good news for those who like to watch the northern lights, as their appearance depends on solar activity.
