Australia has banned the use of the DeepSeek artificial intelligence system, developed in China, on all government-owned devices. While there are currently no restrictions on personal gadgets, the authorities warn that this technology poses serious security threats.

"We are taking swift and decisive action to protect national security and the interests of the country," said Australia's Minister of Home Affairs, Tony Burke.

DeepSeek is a Chinese alternative to ChatGPT, introduced on January 10, 2025. Its developers claim that their technology is on par with Western competitors but significantly cheaper to produce. However, experts warn that user data may be stored on Chinese servers.

Australian cybersecurity expert Dana McKay noted that the data collected by DeepSeek could be used not only for criminal investigations but also for economic espionage.

Moreover, DeepSeek is subject to strict censorship in China. For example, it does not answer questions about the 1989 Tiananmen Square events, Xi Jinping, or the Cultural Revolution.

The ban on DeepSeek in Australia is part of a broader policy to limit Chinese technology. In 2018, the country excluded Huawei and ZTE from its 5G infrastructure, and in 2023, it designated TikTok as a potential security threat. Now, the United States, France, Ireland, and South Korea are also considering imposing restrictions on the use of DeepSeek.
