Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) has indefinitely suspended all flights between Baku and Kazan. The airline explained this decision by citing the frequent closure of airspace over Kazan in recent times.

According to the statement, the suspension of flights to the capital of Tatarstan was made to "ensure flight safety." "AZAL is closely monitoring the current situation and will keep passengers informed of any changes," the company said.

Kazan became the eleventh Russian city where AZAL ceased flights after its Embraer 190 aircraft was reportedly shot down by air defense systems over Grozny on December 25, 2024. The plane crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan.

Following the incident, AZAL canceled flights to Vladikavkaz, Volgograd, Grozny, Makhachkala, Mineralnye Vody, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Saratov, Sochi, and Ufa to ensure safety.

Several other foreign airlines have also announced temporary suspensions of flights to southern Russian cities. These include Israel's El Al, FlyDubai from the UAE, Kazakhstan's Qazaq Air, Turkmenistan Airlines, and Serbia's largest airline, Air Serbia.

According to Euronews and Reuters, the AZAL plane crash occurred due to an anti-aircraft missile launched by Russian air defense during a drone attack over Grozny. The missile explosion damaged the aircraft's fuselage. The crew requested an emergency landing, but no Russian airport granted permission. As a result, the plane headed to Aktau across the Caspian Sea.

The Embraer 190 aircraft operated by AZAL was en route from Baku to Grozny. Onboard were 67 people, including five crew members. 38 passengers died, and 29 survived.

According to the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin called Ilham Aliyev to apologize for the "tragic incident" that occurred in Russian airspace.
