Biden Plans to Supply Israel with $8 Billion in Arms
World
January 4, 2025 - The Biden administration has notified Congress of a proposed $8 billion arms sale to Israel. This sale indicates the continuation of the war in Gaza and the ongoing support from the U.S. for its ally, Israel.
The deal requires approval from relevant committees and includes munitions for fighter jets and attack helicopters, as well as artillery shells, small-diameter bombs, and warheads.
For months, protesters have demanded an arms embargo against Israel, but U.S. policy has remained unchanged. In August, the U.S. approved the sale of $20 billion in fighter jets and other military equipment to Israel.
The Biden administration emphasizes that it is helping Israel defend against Iran-backed militant groups like Hamas in Gaza.
Facing international criticism, Washington has supported Israel’s assault on Gaza, which has displaced nearly all of Gaza's 2.3 million people, led to a hunger crisis, and sparked genocide accusations, which Israel denies.
The Gaza health ministry estimates the death toll at over 45,000, with many additional victims feared buried under rubble.
Washington, Israel’s largest ally and weapons supplier, has also previously vetoed U.N. Security Council resolutions calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Democrat Biden is expected to leave office on January 20, to be succeeded by Republican President-elect Donald Trump. Both are strong supporters of Israel.
