Canada has announced it will officially recognize the State of Palestine during the UN General Assembly session in September. Prime Minister Mark Carney said the decision is tied to the Palestinian leadership’s commitment to long-overdue reforms and the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated during a conference in New York that Canada intends to recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2025.

“Palestinian authorities have committed to essential reforms, including holding general elections in 2026. This opens a new window for change,” Carney said.

He condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, calling the humanitarian situation a catastrophe, and questioned the viability of the long-supported two-state solution due to a lack of progress.

“Tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed, and many more are on the brink of starvation. Canada cannot remain indifferent,” he added.

Carney also criticized settlement and annexation plans discussed in the Israeli Knesset and pointed to ongoing blockades hindering humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Canada will allocate $30 million in additional humanitarian assistance for Palestinians and another $10 million to support stabilization efforts in the West Bank.

His statement coincided with a joint declaration by the foreign ministers of 15 countries — Australia, Andorra, Ireland, Iceland, Spain, Canada, Luxembourg, Malta, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Slovenia, Finland, and France — urging other nations to follow suit in recognizing Palestine. The declaration, adopted during a conference in New York, called recognition “a foundational step” toward a viable resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
