China Begins Protecting Earth from Asteroids

The probability of an asteroid hitting Earth is increasing. Asteroid 2024 YR4 is currently considered one of the most dangerous objects by European and US space agencies. Last week, experts noted an increased likelihood of its impact on Earth. While the UN's Space Mission Planning Advisory Group is working on response strategies, China has started preparing specialists to protect the planet.

Following a risk analysis indicating the possibility of an asteroid impact in 2032, China has initiated the formation of planetary defense forces.

This week, the Chinese government announced 16 new job openings through WeChat, with three positions specifically allocated for the new "planetary defense forces." These roles are open to graduates under the age of 35 with professional and technical qualifications, loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party, and alignment with Xi Jinping’s ideology.

This initiative is being carried out by the State Administration of Science, Technology, and Industry for National Defense (SASTIND). The job positions mainly focus on aerospace engineering, international cooperation, and asteroid monitoring.

SASTIND did not comment on whether this initiative is directly linked to asteroid 2024 YR4. However, according to Andrew Jones, a journalist at SpaceNews specializing in China's aerospace sector, these efforts are part of China’s long-term strategy to develop planetary defense systems.
