On the Greek island of Crete and in Antalya, Turkey, the sky suddenly took on an unusual red-orange hue. The cause was a Saharan dust cloud carried by the powerful cyclone “Erminio” and lifted by strong North African winds.

In Crete, the air became thick and hazy, leading to the cancellation of several flights. The cyclone brought hurricane-force winds, heavy rains, and floods across various regions of Greece. In Nea Makri, near Athens, a 55-year-old man was killed when floodwaters swept him away.

In Antalya and Alanya, the effect appeared as an unusual sky color caused by sunlight refracting through the dust. Dust masses, including those from Libya, were carried by southern winds across the Mediterranean, covering southern Turkey and creating a visually striking natural phenomenon.
