The crew is set to act as pioneers in a unique technological experiment, where the competing technologies of Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos will be docked together in real space conditions for the first time, paving a direct path for humanity's return to Earth's satellite.
NASA has announced the crew for the Artemis 3 lunar mission, scheduled to launch in 2027 from the Kennedy Space Center. The expedition will feature US astronauts Andre Douglas, Frank Rubio, and Randy Bresnik, alongside Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano from the European Space Agency (ESA).
While a lunar landing is not planned for this flight, the mission will lay vital groundwork for returning humans to the Moon's surface in 2028. The crew’s primary objective will be to master docking procedures utilizing technologies developed by SpaceX and Blue Origin. The two-week mission will conclude with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.
