The death toll from the magnitude 6 earthquake that struck Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province on the evening of August 31 has risen to 2,205, while the number of injured has reached 3,640, according to Deputy Spokesman of the interim government Hamdullah Fitrat.
The hardest-hit districts — Nur-Gul, Sawki, Chapa-Dara, and Manogi — remain the focus of ongoing rescue operations.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake’s epicenter was located 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad, near the border with Pakistan, at a depth of 8 kilometers.
China has announced $7 million in humanitarian aid for Afghanistan, which will be used to provide tents, blankets, food, and other essential supplies for those affected.
