Debate Over Olympic Rings on the Eiffel Tower

The decision by Paris city hall to keep the Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower after the Games has sparked intense debate among residents and the descendants of the tower's creator.

Debate Over Olympic Rings on the Eiffel Tower
In 2024, the Eiffel Tower was adorned with a giant Olympic logo for the Summer Games. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo proposed leaving the rings on the tower, announcing that the International Olympic Committee had already given its approval. The rings might be replaced with a lighter material replica.

Many Parisians support this idea, believing that the Olympic rings add charm to the tower and serve as a reminder of the Games, which, according to Hidalgo, "made Parisians fall in love with their city again."

However, a significant portion of the public is opposed. On social media, petitions are being gathered to leave the tower in its original state and not "spoil" it. The descendants of Gustave Eiffel are also against the decision, arguing that the tower should not be used to advertise other organizations.

Moreover, they question the legal basis of Hidalgo's decision, urging consultations with city councilors and experts.
