Denmark legalized the right to appearance and voice

World

Denmark is the first country in the world to legally recognize a person's face, voice, and behavioral characteristics as their personal intellectual property - as a step against the spread of deepfakes and artificial intelligence counterfeits.

Denmark legalized the right to appearance and voice
According to The Guardian, the initiative, almost unanimously supported by parliament, stipulates that creating and publishing a digital copy of a person without their consent - whether it be an image, voice, or imitation of behavior - would be a violation. The author of such content will be ordered to remove the material, and the victim will be entitled to compensation. Parodies and satirical videos that do not fall under the law will be an exception.

The draft law is expected to be officially introduced in the fall. Authorities have already warned digital platforms: violating new regulations will result in large fines, and in case of systematic incidents, the issue may be submitted to the European Commission for consideration.

Copenhagen expects that the new approach will become a regulatory model in the field of digital identity protection and inspire other European countries to take similar measures.
