Egypt is considering breaking the peace agreement with Israel if Palestinian refugees start arriving in Sinai, Israel Hayom reports.
According to the publication, in a series of meetings between senior Egyptian and Israeli officials, Egypt has threatened to suspend or cancel the normalisation agreement with Israel if Palestinians cross the border. " If even one Palestinian refugee crosses over [into Egyptian territory], the peace agreement [between the two countries] will be nullified," an anonymous Egyptian official said.
According to another source, the agreement is likely to be temporarily suspended.
Recall that Egypt and Israel have been at war since the formation of Israel in 1948. In 1978, both countries signed the Camp David Accords in Washington, which led to a peace treaty on 26 March 1979. The agreements called for the withdrawal of all Israeli troops and citizens from the Sinai Peninsula.
