The world's richest man, Elon Musk, has unexpectedly voiced support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. In his account on the social network X, he wrote that "only AfD can save Germany."

Health Minister Karl Lauterbach called this statement "unacceptable and highly problematic." Government spokesperson Christiane Hoffmann, meanwhile, stated that the government is "concerned about this situation."

"It is very troubling that the X platform, which I actively use, is increasingly being used to promote Mr. Musk’s political views and goals. His interference in our election campaign must now be closely monitored," Lauterbach said in an interview with BILD.

AfD's chancellor candidate Alice Weidel agreed with Musk’s statement, writing: "He is absolutely right."

Foreign policy expert Elmar Brok (CDU) believes that Elon Musk is trying to influence the upcoming elections in Germany.

"A handful of the world’s wealthiest individuals want to reshape global politics to their advantage, eliminate all forms of regulation, and align the world with Trump’s vision," he said.

Professor Andreas Rödder, on the other hand, called for calm and restraint. "Musk behaves towards Germany the same way many German politicians have behaved towards the US," he noted in an interview with BILD.

For context, this is not the first time Elon Musk has commented on Germany’s internal political issues. In September 2023, he criticized the "traffic light coalition," claiming that the government was acting "against the will of the people." In November this year, following the coalition’s collapse, Musk called Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Economy Minister Robert Habeck "fools."
