Arnault overtook Musk for the first time in December, when the technology industry was struggling and luxury demonstrated resilience in the face of inflation. LVMH, which Arnaud founded, owns brands such as Louis Vuitton, Fendi and Hennessy.

Faith in the viability of the luxury sector is starting to wane amid growing signs of a slowdown in economic growth, especially in China's most important market. LVMH shares have fallen by about 10 percent since April, at some point in one day, $11 billion disappeared from Arno's net worth.

Musk, meanwhile, has received more than $55.3 billion this year, mainly thanks to Tesla.

The capitalization of the Austin-based automaker, which accounts for 71 percent of its fortune, has grown by 66 percent over the past year. According to the Bloomberg index, Musk's fortune is now estimated at about $192.3 billion, and Arno's fortune is at $186.6 billion.
