Stockholm expects the membership process to be finalised within weeks.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has approved Sweden's application for NATO membership and sent the relevant protocol to the Turkish parliament for consideration. This was reported by Anadolu Agency.
"On 23 October 2023, the protocol on Sweden's NATO membership was signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and sent to the Turkish Grand National Assembly for consideration," the Turkish Presidential Administration said.
Stockholm expects the membership process to be finalised within weeks. Washington has already expressed hope that this will happen as soon as possible.
At the NATO summit in Vilnius in July, Turkey agreed to unblock the process after the White House signalled it would allow Ankara to buy 40 new F-16 fighter jets and modernisation kits, while Sweden began extraditing Kurdish terror suspects to Turkey and promised it would help Ankara move closer to the EU.
