Erkinjon Turdimov Confirmed as Governor of Syrdarya Region
Uzbekistan
Syrdarya Region has received new leadership as deputies approved Erkinjon Turdimov as the region’s hokim (governor). President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, recommending his candidacy, emphasized the need for a “determined, demanding, and capable leader” to advance the region’s development.
Erkinjon Okbutaevich Turdimov, who had served as acting governor of Syrdarya Region since January, has been officially confirmed in the post. The decision was made on December 4 at an extraordinary session of the regional council of people’s deputies. According to the presidential press service, his candidacy was proposed after gathering opinions from residents and entrepreneurs.
Speaking at the session, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev stated that the region is poised for “major changes and development” in the coming years. He stressed that Syrdarya needs a leader capable of promptly resolving issues affecting citizens and businesses.
The president outlined key development targets for next year: attracting $3 billion in investments, increasing exports to $500 million, and creating 185,000 jobs. The governor, he noted, must actively implement these plans and elevate Syrdarya into the ranks of the country’s most advanced regions.
Erkinjon Turdimov has extensive leadership experience. From July 2018 until late November 2024, he headed Samarkand Region. Media reports suggested he stepped down due to health issues, although the official statement said he was released “in connection with a transition to another position.” He previously led Surkhandarya Region and served as the governor of Navoi Region from 2008 to 2016.
Turdimov began his career in banking, working in regional branches of Uzpromstroybank from 1991 to 1995 before becoming deputy governor of Zarafshan.
