Explosion in Moscow During Trump Envoy’s Visit

On Friday, April 25, 2025, a senior Russian military official was killed in a car explosion near Moscow. The incident occurred just hours before a scheduled meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff. The attack is suspected to have been orchestrated by Ukraine.
Russian authorities identified the victim as Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, deputy head of the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.
Russia’s Investigative Committee stated that the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device filled with shrapnel. A criminal case has been opened.
According to reports, a bomb placed in a parked vehicle was detonated remotely in the city of Balashikha, Moscow region, as a local military officer—believed to be the general—walked by.
This suspected Ukrainian operation may be unwelcome news for the Trump administration, which is eager to show concrete progress toward peace before Trump’s 100th day in office.
It’s worth recalling that last December, Ukraine’s security services targeted another high-ranking Russian general who was killed by an explosive device hidden in an electric scooter outside a residential building in Moscow.
At the time, Keith Kellogg, Donald Trump’s appointed special representative for Ukraine and Russia, criticized the killing of Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, saying it may violate the rules of warfare.
