The Changzheng-5 Y8 rocket launched from the Wenchang Space Launch Center on Hainan Island on May 3. The Chang'e-6 spacecraft is expected to bring back soil from the far side of the Moon to Earth for the first time in human history — about two kilograms. Scientists estimate its age to be around 4 billion years. The landing site for the probe was chosen to be the Apollo crater located in the South Pole-Aitken Basin.

The USSR and the USA brought samples back to Earth from the visible side of the Moon, with their estimated age being approximately 3 billion years. However, the Chang'e-5 spacecraft collected soil in 2020 with an estimated age of 2 billion years.
