Former South Korean President Yun Suk-yeol could face a 10-year prison sentence in the first of four criminal cases related to the declaration of martial law in December 2024. The court’s decision is expected on January 16.
A special prosecutor in South Korea has requested a 10-year prison sentence for former President Yun Suk-yeol in a case of obstruction of justice. The final hearing was held on December 26 at the Central District Court in Seoul.
The prosecution accuses Yun of attempting to prevent investigators from arresting him in January 2025 and violating the rights of nine cabinet members who were not summoned to a session regarding the martial law plan.
This is the first of four criminal cases against the former president, all connected to his actions in December 2024. The main charge involves organizing a rebellion.
In December 2024, Yun declared martial law, claiming it was necessary to protect the country from “communist forces” and accused the opposition of “anti-state activities.” The parliament repealed the decree, and the Constitutional Court approved his impeachment in April 2025.
Early presidential elections were held in June 2025, and opposition Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung won.
The verdict for the first case is expected on January 16, two days before the expiration of Yun Suk-yeol’s detention.
