French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will formally recognize the State of Palestine at the upcoming UN General Assembly session in September. This decision makes France the first country in the G7 to take this step.

The official statement emphasizes the urgency of halting the war in Gaza, providing humanitarian aid to civilians, freeing hostages, and achieving lasting peace through the demilitarization of Palestine. It also recalls France’s long-standing commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

Palestinian authorities welcomed the decision, calling it a sign of respect for international law and the right to self-determination. In contrast, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the move as “a reward for terrorism,” while U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called it “irresponsible.”

To date, over 140 UN member states have recognized Palestine. Within the EU, countries such as Spain and Ireland have previously announced similar decisions. Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen — with international organizations reporting a sharp rise in child malnutrition and hunger.
