After the failed first round, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union, Friedrich Mertz, still won: on May 6, the Bundestag elected him Chancellor of the FRG. 325 deputies voted for it - only nine more than the required minimum. This was a historic event in Germany's recent policy.

CDU leader Friedrich Mertz was officially confirmed as German Chancellor following the 2nd round of Bundestag voting. He received 325 votes with a minimum of 316, bypassing the critical threshold after failing in the first round, when he received only six votes.

Previously, no candidate in GFR's history had failed voting after successful coalition negotiations. This incident became a precedent, sparking heated debate in parliament. Mertz's supporters warned of "catastrophic consequences" in case of failure, while the opposition accused him of lacking leadership.

After confirmation, the 69-year-old Mertz received an appointment letter from President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and took the oath. Soon his cabinet of ministers will also take the oath.

The parliamentary elections on February 23 led to the victory of the CDU/CSU with 28.5% of the vote. The second place was unexpectedly taken by "Alternative for Germany" (20.8%), and the SDPG showed one of the worst results - 16.4%. The previous ruling coalition dissolved due to budget disagreements and disputes over aid to Ukraine.
