After a 13-year hiatus, the German Embassy has resumed its operations in Syria. The dpa agency reported this on March 20.

German Embassy Reopens in Syria
Germany's diplomatic mission was reopened in the Syrian capital, Damascus. This event took place three months after the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. The opening ceremony was attended by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. The German diplomatic mission was previously closed in 2012, following the outbreak of the civil war in Syria.

For now, the embassy will be temporarily headed by Stefan Schneck, Germany’s special envoy to Syria. A full ambassador will be appointed later. The embassy is not yet handling visa applications—this process will still be managed by the German embassy in Lebanon. However, the new diplomatic presence will allow for better engagement with civil society and a quicker response to significant developments in the country.

"A new political chapter between Europe and Syria, between Germany and Syria, is possible. However, this comes with clear expectations that freedom, security, and equal opportunities in Syria must be accessible to all people—women and men, representatives of different ethnicities and religions," Annalena Baerbock stated during her visit to Syria.
