A top Hamas leader and head of the group's politburo, Ismail Haniyeh, said they were close to reaching a truce with Israel.
"We are close to reaching truce agreement," Hamas said in a statement on Telegram, which was also obtained by Reuters. Details of the agreement were not specified.
The agreement could include a five-day ceasefire that includes a ground ceasefire and restrictions on Israeli air operations in the southern Gaza Strip. This is reported by AFP, citing eyewitnesses.
In return, 50 to 100 people captured by Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants will be released. Among them will be Israelis and prisoners of other nationalities, but not soldiers. Under the agreement, some 300 Palestinians will be released from Israeli prisons.
