Houthis Capture Al-Mokha Port and Advance Toward Bab el-Mandeb

The Houthis have taken control of the strategic Red Sea port city of Al-Mokha, advancing closer to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Amid the offensive, Yemen’s government forces are redeploying south, while authorities in Taiz province have offered an amnesty to fighters willing to lay down their weapons. The capture of Al-Mokha has been confirmed by Reuters, AP and other international sources.
According to Yemeni military sources, government forces are withdrawing toward Dhubab near the strait and establishing an alternative command center there. The Houthis had earlier advanced in the Al-Waziya and Mawza areas and taken control of the Khalid bin Walid military camp. Reuters also reported Houthi advances toward the Hanish Islands.
Al-Buhayti, a member of the Ansar Allah political bureau, claimed that forces supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government had surrendered in large numbers. He said military columns surrendered in Hays, Al-Mokha, Al-Khawkhah, Taiz and Jawf, while three brigades handed over weapons and equipment. These claims have not been independently confirmed by international sources.
The capture of Al-Mokha marks the Houthis’ most significant territorial gain since the 2022 truce and increases the security risks around the Bab el-Mandeb shipping route.
Against the backdrop of the escalation, Taiz authorities announced preparations to implement a presidential amnesty for participants in fighting on the western coast who lay down their weapons and return home. They are being promised safe routes and equal rights and obligations.
