Hunting Generals: How a Suicide Attack in Kati Decapitated Mali’s Military Leadership

The Republic of Mali is grappling with its severest security crisis since the military junta took power. Following an unprecedented wave of coordinated attacks by Tuareg rebels and jihadist groups, the country's Defense Minister, Lieutenant General Sadio Camara, has been killed, while the standing of Russian mercenaries in key northern regions remains in doubt.

Hunting Generals: How a Suicide Attack in Kati Decapitated Mali’s Military Leadership
Saturday morning began in catastrophe for the Malian leadership in the town of Kati, located just 15 kilometers north of Bamako. The country’s primary military base, which houses the residences of the ruling elite, was targeted by a suicide bomber. A vehicle laden with explosives rammed the gates of Sadio Camara's residence. According to official government reports, the minister engaged in a firefight with the attackers, neutralizing several militants before sustaining fatal injuries. He later passed away in a hospital. The blast also claimed the lives of his family members and several worshippers at a nearby mosque that collapsed from the shockwave.

Simultaneously with the strike on Kati, attacks surged through Bamako, Gao, Sévaré, and Kidal. Rebels from the Tuareg "Azawad Liberation Front" (FLA) and radicals from "Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin" (JNIM) demonstrated a frightening level of coordination. Events in Kidal drew particular scrutiny: rebels claimed that units of the Russian "Africa Corps" abandoned the city without a fight following a prior agreement. The Russian side has maintained an ambiguous silence, neither confirming nor denying the withdrawal from this strategic northern point.

The fallout of this "Black Saturday" could be fatal for the regime. Beyond Camara's death, reports indicate that intelligence chief General Modibo Koné and Chief of General Staff General Oumar Diarra were also wounded. The head of the junta, Assimi Goïta, has not been seen in public since the attacks began; sources suggest he was urgently evacuated to a special forces base. The loss of key figures in the military cabinet and rumors of back-channel deals between foreign mercenaries and rebels cast serious doubt on the current Malian government's viability and the effectiveness of its alliance with Moscow.
