Khan released the contents of a secret telegram sent by Pakistan's ambassador in Washington to the government.
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. The BBC reports that.
"A Pakistani court on Tuesday sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and one of his party deputies to 10 years in prison each, after finding them guilty of revealing official secrets," the former prime minister's party said.
According to the prosecution, Khan made public the contents of a secret telegram sent by Pakistan's ambassador in Washington to the government.
The former prime minister's party continues to believe the case is trumped up and intends to challenge the verdict, Reuters reported.
Imran Khan, who was removed as prime minister in 2022, already has a three-year jail term - he was previously found guilty of corruption. The sentence was handed down in August 2023.
The new 10-year sentence comes a week before Pakistan's general election. This means that the former prime minister will be banned from contesting elections.
Khan himself calls all charges against him politically motivated.
