Iran’s Vice President for Strategic Affairs, Javad Zarif, resigned just ten days after taking office. He announced his decision on August 11 via social media platform X.
Zarif had been involved in selecting candidates for the new government but admitted he couldn’t adequately address the involvement of women, youth, and ethnic minorities. As a result, he decided to return to his academic career.
Zarif is a prominent figure within Iran’s reformist wing, known for his role in negotiating the 2015 nuclear deal. He has also been an advocate for dialogue with the U.S., which has drawn criticism from conservatives.
On August 12, Zarif clarified that his resignation was not due to disappointment in President Pezeshkian, but rather doubts about his own effectiveness in the role. He called on all patriotic Iranians committed to the country's development to support the president.
