The deaths of four Israeli service members in southern Lebanon have triggered a new wave of international tension and sharp rhetoric within the Israeli cabinet, jeopardizing a recently signed preliminary ceasefire agreement.

Itamar Ben-Gvir Calls for Harsh Retaliation After Deaths of Israeli Soldiers
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that during a military operation near Kfar Tebnit, a direct hit on a tank killed four soldiers, including the commander of the 401st Armored Brigade's 52nd Battalion, 32-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Dor Gedalya Ben Simhon. In response, Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir released a highly aggressive statement on the X social media platform, asserting that "all of Lebanon must burn" and emphasizing that the security of Israeli citizens cannot be compromised, despite diplomatic efforts by the United States.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of fragile diplomatic progress made after the United States and Iran signed a temporary accord committing both sides and their allies to suspend all hostilities. Nevertheless, the escalation continued: the IDF launched overnight strikes against Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon, leaving 18 people dead, while an explosive drone strike from Lebanon on Friday severely wounded another Israeli reserve officer. Ben-Gvir's radical stance has once again exposed internal divisions within the Israeli leadership, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously distanced himself from the minister's controversial methods, stressing that they do not align with official state norms and values.
