Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Resigns

Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has announced his resignation, set to take place next month, following public discontent over political scandals and rising living costs.
Kishida made the announcement during a press conference, stating that he made this difficult decision for the people and with the intention of advancing political reforms. He also confirmed that he would not seek re-election as the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
The LDP will hold an election in September to choose a new leader, which will result in a new prime minister. Kishida's approval ratings plummeted after he took office in 2021, due to scandals involving the LDP's ties with the Unification Church and undisclosed political donations.
Additionally, public dissatisfaction grew as wages failed to keep pace with inflation. The new LDP leader will need to restore public confidence and address Japan's pressing challenges in the future.
