Three undeclared World War II bombs were found on June 3rd during roadworks in the Doitz area. The authorities organized an emergency evacuation within a radius of 1000 meters: 20,500 people, including hotel staff and central station employees, were to leave their homes and offices.

According to the mayor's office, "this is the largest operation since the end of World War II." Temporary shelters have been opened for the evacuated in exhibition halls and college buildings. The center of Cologne - including the famous cathedral and philharmonic - has been closed, and train and ship traffic on the Rhine have been suspended.

After neutralization, the shells will be transported to special containers for disposal.
