MEP Questions EU’s Ability to Protect Greenland

The European Union would be unable to effectively resist a potential US takeover of Greenland and would most likely seek to negotiate terms, compensation and conditions instead, according to Thierry Mariani, a Member of the European Parliament from France’s National Rally party.

Speaking to RIA Novosti, Mariani said the EU lacks both political and strategic tools to counter such a scenario. At best, he argued, Brussels would try to turn any annexation into a negotiated deal.

His remarks come amid growing concern in Europe over statements by former US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly said Greenland should become part of the United States due to its strategic importance for national security and competition with China and Russia. Trump has also declined to rule out the use of force.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on January 8 that EU member states had discussed possible responses should US threats toward Greenland become real.

Greenland’s authorities have firmly stated that the island is not for sale. Denmark, meanwhile, has emphasized its close alliance with the United States while insisting on full respect for its territorial integrity.

Greenland, a former Danish colony until 1953, remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark but has enjoyed broad autonomy and self-government since 2009.
