Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has responded to Donald Trump's proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "American Gulf." Instead, she humorously suggested renaming the entire North American continent as "Mexican America."

During her daily press briefing, Sheinbaum, standing in front of a world map, jokingly proposed renaming the continent "America Mexicana" or "Mexican America." She noted that the 1814 founding document, which preceded the Mexican Constitution, referred to the continent by that name. "It sounds nice, doesnt it?" she added sarcastically.

She also emphasized that the ocean basin bordered by the U.S. Gulf Coast, Mexico's eastern states, and Cuba has been known as the Gulf of Mexico since 1607.

On January 20, as Trump prepares for his second inauguration, he announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "American Gulf" or the "American Gulf with a beautiful ring to it."

Additionally, Trump urged the Mexican government to take stronger measures against illegal immigration. In response, Sheinbaum firmly declared that in Mexico, "power belongs to the people."

When Trump proposed a 25% tariff on Mexican imports, Sheinbaum warned that Mexico would take reciprocal measures. She stressed that any tariffs would harm both countries, leading to inflation and job losses.

On immigration, Sheinbaum adopted a more conciliatory tone, aligning with Mexico's longstanding efforts to curb migration northward. She stated that Mexico is open to accepting deportees from other countries but may impose certain conditions.
