Walz said the move is precautionary, stressing that the National Guard troops are under state authority and are prepared for deployment if necessary.

The incident occurred during demonstrations opposing ICE actions. According to Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin, the woman attempted to drive her vehicle into ICE officers. Fearing for their safety, an officer opened fire, fatally wounding her.

Videos shared on social media show the SUV blocking a street and preventing official vehicles from passing. As officers tried to remove the driver, she accelerated, shots were fired, and the vehicle later crashed into parked cars.

Following the incident, localized protests erupted. Demonstrators threw snowballs at police and burned an American flag. Law enforcement responded with crowd-control measures, including pepper spray.

The shooting occurred one day after Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the launch of the largest immigration enforcement operation in Minnesota. According to the Associated Press, around 2,000 agents were deployed to the state.
