The new project, which complements the European Union's training mission, is designed to help not only in military training of Ukrainian servicemen, but also in teaching them military management strategies.

According to the Pais newspaper, the aim of the project is to bring the Ukrainian forces in line with NATO standards. Defence ministers of the North Atlantic alliance countries are expected to discuss details of the project at meetings in Brussels, which is expected to be finalised at the NATO summit in Washington in July.

Sources told the newspaper that discussions are underway on the financing of the new centre and the type of instructors to be brought in. These could be instructors on a permanent basis or personnel sent by alliance members on short-term missions. According to diplomatic sources, the new specialised centre will provide training to help Ukraine achieve full compatibility with NATO and adopt the alliance's doctrines and standards.

The newspaper said that the creation of such a training centre for the Ukrainian Armed Forces represents a new element in the relationship between NATO and Ukraine.
